The adidas 1970 Mexico Telstar revolutionized soccer ball design and starred in the World Cup alongside Pele. COVER: The Telstar has a leather cover, which was the standard for the 70s. The Telstar was the first ball with 32 hand-stitched panels: 12 black pentagons and 20 white hexagons. This truncated icosahedron (or bucky ball) design created the roundest ball ever. The Telstar was the first white ball ever to be decorated with black pentagons. This design made the ball more visible for television viewers, hence the name "Telstar".
